There is a fair bit of confusion when it comes to social media marketing. Frequently the prevailing idea is that social media marketing consists of employing social media networks such as Facebook and Google Plus and platforms like Twitter to push out a message to the masses.

If it was as simple as that we would all have acquired an easy means to mass broadcast our sales pitch and all that would have been left now is to sit back and watch our business profits grow. The very fact that I need to address this in a podcast argues that things are not as simple as that.

Certainly, at some level, social media networks do allow us to mass broadcast a message, but that is only true as far as the potential number of people we can reach is concerned. A well managed account on Twitter, Facebook and Google Plus can potentially reach hundreds of thousands of people and all it takes is one click. Just because the execution is easy however, does not mean that the marketing is.
