With just a few weeks to go until the end of the year social media PR disasters keep on happening, with PayPal now adding their hat in a ring crowded with global players.

Given the fact that many of the companies involved have had a good history of managing corporate communications and corporate image, in the past, and are actively involved in socially responsible projects (like PayPal and Virgin) or understand how digital works (like Blackberry and NetFlix), you have to ask: “why do they not ‘get’ social media?”.

The question lies at the very heart of the disruption in communications. The traditional, top down way of communicating with the public through a broadcast message is gone.
